In The Classroom - Letting Children Simply Be Children

Class at The Magic Acorn takes place in a setting that is beautiful, unhurried, and secure and offers children their first taste of being with others in a group as they work and play.

The peaceful environment in the room allows the children to relax and truly explore their environment.  The children see the adults engaged in meaningful activities, while caregivers can observe children at play.  Joyful experiences with parents and the rest of the class help build a healthy sense of self and provide a strong foundation for future social relationships.

We enter and begin class with warm greetings, putting on comfortable classroom slippers, contributing a piece of fruit to be made into a shared fruit salad served at snack, and the start of free play for the children.

The creative play during the first part of class enhances the children’s imagination and stimulates their natural desire to develop through movement.  They can choose from a selection of simple, beautiful toys crafted from natural material such as silk scarves, cloth dolls, wood and other natural fibers - all treasures of the young child’s imagination.  Close by, the adults engage in various hand work projects or assist the teacher in meaningful activity.

As free play ends, everyone works together to put away the toys accompanied by the “Dusty Gnome Clean Up” song and puppet.

Everyone is invited to join circle time, which includes a welcome song, “Little Star” and other seasonal songs, poems, and stories accompanied by movement and finger play.

We begin snack time next, after the children wash their hands in a basin, and we take a moment to express gratitude for the food we are about to share.  At our community table, we enjoy a delicious and nutritious snack that we worked together to prepare.

We move on to a tabletop puppet story, a favorite time of class, which features props made from natural materials.  Both circle and story time reflect the world of nature and seasonal festivals.

Class ends spending time outside letting the children play in nature.

Each Class Uses Gentle Rhythms Resulting in a Structured Gathering

"We all very much look forward to our weekly class with Miss Amy.  Given the age difference of my children, this is the only activity I have found that appeals to them both.

I enjoy my time at The Magic Acorn as much as my kids.  The classroom is a special place where children and adults alike can relax and feel comfortable.

When we are home as part of our daily routine, we sing the songs from class that celebrate every day life and our connection with nature.”
